Chicago Heights, IL Patch:
Jesse Jackson Jr. wants his constituents to know that he loves them to death, according to a Matteson pastor.
In his Sunday sermon at Victory Apostolic Church in Matteson, the Rev. Andrew Singleton Jr. spoke of a two-hour phone conversation he says he had with Jackson, who recently returned to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.
Audio of the sermon was sent to Patch, but church officials said they did not make the recording. Officials at the church, however, confirmed Singleton's mention of his conversation with Jackson during the sermon.

Bitter Amanda,
?
What are your thoughts on this: you're on a date with someone you've recently met,?and within the first five minutes he states "you'll probably find that I have more respect for you than you have for yourself."
?
My immediate response was "fuck you "(which he thought was cute and funny). But you barely know me, and you're already making assumptions about the level of respect I have for myself? And you're so amazingly awesome that you're going to shower me with the tons of respect that I lack? As a followup, I was compared to a majority of the women he's dated in the past, who've all had really low self esteem and made lots of self-deprecating comments about themselves, like "OMG, I'm so fat!"?
?
So... you're a player (because the word "majority" does not come up in a discussion of women you've dated if there hasn't been a shit-ton), you just compared me to all the previous women (way to make you're current date feel special), and you're insinuating that I'm fat? Why else would you be?expecting the fat comments at any minute?
?
I finished?the date?out, mostly because I know I have a tendency to write people off without giving them a chance.?But after that respect comment I was done, and really have no desire to see him again. Am I overreacting, or is?a comment like that a?red flag??
?

ps. Another thing that pissed me off, which has me convinced his ego needs deflating. We also had?a disagreement about martial arts; he doesn't believe the martial arts have to be violent, they are only violent if you *perceive* them to be. Lets look past that the point that the "martial" part of martial arts is built right into the name. My twenty years of experience in multiple?fields and two black belts could not change his mind that martial arts are violent.?Why was he not convinced? Because his undergrad degree was in sports and recreation. He is a professional game player for a living. My takeaway from that conversation: "my experience is more relevant than yours, and I'm not open to any viewpoints but my own."? Gag.
Dear Black Belt,
Damn, girl. I'm impressed you didn't sneak out the bathroom window during this date. This guy is basically one big red flag. Respect for sticking it out, knowing you write people off.?
Here's my opinion on dating new people, which ultimately may be an unpopular one. Go with your gut. If you sat with this guy and thought, "What an insufferable douchebag," then he's probably not Prince Charming. Another woman somewhere with less self-respect than you will probably find his level of douche charming enough and allow herself to put up with it. However, that doesn't mean you have to be that girl.?
Going out with these losers is horrible, sure, but you never know. Doesn't hurt to meet them. Life experiences, good stories, character building, blah blah blah. I personally like that you all write me letters about them. ?But when you get that Red Flag Feeling it's cool to write him off.?
Don't worry about the gym teacher. Let him bore someone else.
Solitarily yours,
Bitter Amanda

Living in a world dominated by technology and connected through social media has given us portals to reach people on the other side of the globe like never before. No matter if you are a business or personal brand, media has always been the key to reaching an audience, whether it be through radio, television, newspapers, billboards, or the internet, however, how you use media has evolved just as much as media itself.
Social media is frequently referred to as ?new media? due to it providing access to content instantly, at any time and on any digital device, but just like previous media outlets, it can only help your business or personal brand if you are using it.
It is often suggested to brands that are looking to reach, connect, and engage with an online audience to sign up, create, and manage a Facebook or Twitter account. It?s no secret, that these two social networks are major tools in helping promote and build a global audience, but why stop there?
In only creating one account on a social network just to say that your brand is using social media or in not using various social networks due to a lack of time can actually hurt your brand even though your intent was to help it.
The more you use social sites and establish an online presence, the more credibility your business or personal brand will have. It is extremely important to make time to update and connect with people, via Facebook, Twitter, Google+, as well as, other social sites, for not only will you be seen by more people, found easier within Google?s search engine, but will also be connecting with multiple audiences on numerous sites across the web.
Having your brand?s name, image, and tagline attached to various social networking accounts is easy visual marketing and in having several audiences provides more opportunities for word of mouth marketing to occur.
Creating content to share on your social networks is another great way to showcase your brand. Attach your brand to infographics you make, videos you create, blog posts you write, and photos you take. Think outside the box of traditional marketing and come up with clever, innovative, and interesting methods for marketing your brand.
Many businesses have already found a smart way of connecting their brand with their audiences via television shows and movies. Numerous companies have reached out to the TV and film industry to have certain products included in episodes with our favorite actors drinking, eating, driving, or wearing a particular item, which ultimately makes us want to have that product too. Your brand may not be able to or want to market this way, nor do you have to, this is merely a great example of going where the audience is, incorporating your brand there and being clever about it.
Putting your brand?s logo on social networks, blogs, and videos not only makes people see it more; it makes people want what you offer more too. People trust brands that they see and hear a lot about more than the ones they don?t. It is inevitable, the more visual your brand is, the more credible it will be in the eyes of the consumer.

At 4:21 p.m. ET Monday, the tech blog Gizmodo tweeted that its downed?site would "be back soon!?There was a data center battery failure after the power went down in Lower Manhattan. Generators powering up." But almost a day later, the site ? and its sister?sites in the Gawker network ? were still limping.
Gawker was not alone. The Huffington Post and BuzzFeed also experienced outages, and trouble publishing, and CNET reported that Livestream, host of the live "Sandycam" video?feed, had a "major outage" as well.
When you see a website go down,?the blame usually falls on hackers or, more often, software bugs.?We don't often think of?the Web as having a physical existence, but sure enough, Sandy has shown that nature can impact websites with greater force than any team of malicious code wizards can summon up.
The problem was explained by BuzzFeed ? not in a post on its own site, but on a BuzzFeed channel on the Tumblr blogging network:
Datagram, the ISP whose Manhattan servers host BuzzFeed, Huffington Post, Gawker, and other sites, has lost power, an official there told us via text this evening.
"Basement flooded, fuel pump off line ? we got people working on it now. 5 feet of water now," the official wrote.
Even Tuesday, Datagram was still struggling to recover. At 11:20 a.m. ET, the company's website reported: "We are still flooded, as soon as the basement is cleared we will be allowed to operate the generator and restore power." Then at 11:53 a.m. came the update: "The building has slowly begun to pump water out of the basement. They are unable to provide an ETA however."
Nationally, the picture was not so grim. Most of the country's?top websites "appear to have weathered the storm remarkably well," wrote Aaron Rudger, senior?marketing manager of Web performance for Keynote, a Web monitoring service, in an email to NBC News. "Overall performance slowed by about 7 percent, with average availability of 98 percent."
Rudger said that only one of 40 biggest websites tracked by Keynote had an outage in the timeframe?of?Sandy's impact, job site Monster.com. "That site experienced major failures at around 8?p.m. Pacific Time last night, persisting throughout the evening and into the morning. The site appears to have recovered now."
Gawker founder and publisher Nick Denton "was among Internet honchos who engages a data center in downtown Manhattan, which, unshockingly to anyone who's read a weather report in the last five days, didn't make it," wrote The Awl's Choire Sicha, who added, "The rest of us made data center preparations; even then, some of us went down after midnight."
But given the scope of the outage, it's not clear what quick preparations could have been made to avoid the problems, especially for sites that are hosted in a single physical?location.?
"We had plans for a second data center in 2013 which we will now be moving up," Scott Kidder, Gawker's?executive director of operations, told NBC News in an email. "We ? as other publishers ? had counted on Datagram's ability to withstand anticipated natural disasters, which seems to have been misplaced."
Like other sites facing data failures in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Gawker turned to alternative publishing. (You can now?find Gawker sites at updates.gawker.com,?updates.gizmodo.com, updates.kotaku.com, updates.jalopnik.com, and so on). Denton urged his staff to turn to Facebook and Twitter as well.
"While we're obviously disappointed with Datagram," said Kidder, "our priority has been getting back online for our readers with an alternate publishing platform, which we've now done with all sites thanks to Tumblr."
"Elements of BuzzFeed?s site and many story pages are back online, thanks to a Content Delivery Network, Akamai, which hosts the content at servers distributed around the world," said BuzzFeed's Tumblr page. "We aren?t able to update the site right now, however," so the site provided its Tumblr, Twitter and Facebook info for readers.
During its outage, The Huffington Post was able to redirect traffic to an alternate server at status.huffingtonpost.com, but appeared to have recovered sooner than the?others.?
Re-directing readers to social channels and new Web addresses is a messy proposition, but in today's twitterfied news world, it's not as crazy as it sounds. At least not for BuzzFeed, according the site's tech editor, Matt Buchanan.
"I think BuzzFeed is in a unique position because it's a social publisher at its core ? so it's totally natural for us to move to these other media," Buchanan told NBC News. "I think a lot of our readers are totally comfortable following us as natives of the social Web. Also, it helps that we had strong presences on Twitter and Tumblr to begin with."
Despite intermittent Tumblr outages, Buchanan said traffic was "picking up" on BuzzFeed's alternatives, particularly buzzfeedpolitics.tumblr.com.
But?getting BuzzFeed's main?site back on track has taken more Herculean efforts: It is rebuilding the whole operation on a cloud-based server run by Amazon.?"The team have been working non-stop since we went down yesterday," said BuzzFeed's Ben Smith.?One of BuzzFeed's New York-based?developers who coded through the night for the emergency site?transplant did so with a tree smashed through the roof of his home.

When Hurricane Irene swept up the east coast 14 months ago, it was clear that it was going to be a storm for the record books. By the time the skies cleared and Irene had faded, 50 people were dead and more than $15 billion in property damage had been done - and that was just in the United States. (See Related: Hurricane Irene Could Be Among Costliest U.S. Storms)
As bad and as costly as natural disasters are, economists are quick to point out that they tend not to have such a big impact on the overall economy. That's because they are not only short-term events but also because the are offset by a stimulus-like spurt of spending that boosts the books of retailers, landscapers and line crews, while taking a toll on the power companies and airlines. (See Related: Hurricane Sandy: Economic Impact Could Pound Main Street)
Interestingly, industry-watchers say that insurers can be either big winners or losers since they budget for losses, spread and hedge their risk, and actually win if things aren't as bad as expected. In addition, subsequent rate increases on homeowners policies can also serve as a more lagged boon to their bottom lines.
Of course, when the entire population of the east coast is simultaneously looking to stock up on bottled water, batteries, canned food, ice, candles, plywood, generators and chain saws, it will undoubtedly have an impact. However, the lasting value of this spending surge is anything but conclusive, for both the individual industries and stocks in particularly. (See Related: Hurricane Sandy Could Cost $10 Billion a Day)
Part of the reason is simply due to demand shift; meaning money that is spent today cannot be respent tomorrow. If you take a look at a one-month chart of Home Depot (HD), Wal-Mart (WMT) and the S&P 500 from a week before Irene hit until 3 weeks after, you can see in the link here that Wal-Mart gets left behind.
However, when you extend that chart through today you see that it is the S&P 500 that gets left behind; its 25% gain over the past 14-months is dwarfed by the 45% and 85% surges by Wal-Mart and Home Depot. Naturally, it is impossible to say how much, if any, of those gains are directly attributable to Irene.
Out of curiosity, I looked up the third-quarter earnings statements from the two retailers to see if there were any indications or references within their results.
In the case of Home Depot, the answer is unquestionably, Yes. "Our third quarter was driven by strength in our core categories and storm-related sales as well as strong operating performance," said Frank Blake, chairman & CEO in the company's November 2011 announcement in which Home Depot's U.S. comparable store sales were up 3.8%.
Wal-Mart's earnings release made no mention of the hurricane or storm-related buying, focusing instead on the overall condition of the economy on consumer buying habits. The company, and its Sam's Club unit, did reference their corporate donations to the Red Cross, Salvation Army and communities directly affected by the disasters.

Flooding from Hurricane Sandy's storm surge may cause $90 billion in damage to nearly 300,000 properties in the superstorm's path, says the analytics firm CoreLogic.
Eight of the most populous metros in the Northeast are projected to bear the brunt of flooding from Hurricane Sandy, a huge, nearly 1,000-mile-wide Category 1 hurricane that could mix and intensify with two other weather systems coming from the north and west. Those cities include Washington, D.C., New York and Boston.
CoreLogic's estimate did not include the damage that Hurricane Sandy could inflict directly through wind and rain. Torrential downpours associated with the storm can cause flooding that is not part of a storm surge.
"This is a large, slow-moving, persistent and dangerous storm. Its impacts are going to be far-reaching and no doubt very costly," said Dr. Howard Botts, vice president and director of database development for CoreLogic Spatial Solutions.

Hurricane Sandy bore down on the Eastern Seaboard's largest cities on Monday, forcing the shutdown of mass transit, schools and financial markets, sending coastal residents fleeing, and threatening a dangerous mix of high winds, soaking rain, and a surging wall of water up to 11 feet tall.
Sandy strengthened before dawn and stayed on a predicted path toward Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York -- putting it on a collision course with two other weather systems that would create a superstorm with the potential for havoc over 800 miles from the East Coast to the Great Lakes. About 2 to 3 feet of snow were even forecast for mountainous parts of West Virginia.
The tempest could endanger up to 50 million people for days.
"This is the worst-case scenario," said Louis Uccellini, environmental prediction chief for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Many workers planned to stay home Monday as subways, buses and trains shut down across the region under the threat of flooding that could inundate tracks and tunnels. Airports also closed, with thousands of flights canceled, and authorities warned that the time for evacuation was running out or already past. Utilities brought in extra crews, anticipating widespread power failures.
The center of the storm was positioned to come ashore Monday night in New Jersey, meaning that the worst of the surge could be in the northern part of that state and in New York City and on Long Island. Higher tides brought by a full moon compounded the threat to the metropolitan area of about 20 million people.
Canals around Long Island's Great South Bay area were brimming at two hours before high tide. Water was about a foot deep on some streets in Lindenhurst, N.Y., by 7 a.m. Monday.
As rain from the leading edges began to fall over the Northeast on Sunday, hundreds of thousands of people from Maryland to Connecticut were ordered to leave low-lying coastal areas, including 375,000 in lower Manhattan and other parts of New York City, 50,000 in Delaware and 30,000 in Atlantic City, N.J., where the city's 12 casinos shut down for only the fourth time ever.
"I think this one's going to do us in," said Mark Palazzolo, who boarded up his bait-and-tackle shop in Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., with the same wood that he used in past storms, crossing out the names of Hurricanes Isaac and Irene and spray-painting "Sandy" next to them. "I got a call from a friend of mine from Florida last night who said, 'Mark, get out! If it's not the storm, it'll be the aftermath. People are going to be fighting in the streets over gasoline and food.' "
President Barack Obama declared emergencies in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, authorizing federal relief work to begin well ahead of time. He promised that the government would "respond big and respond fast" after the storm hits.
"My message to the governors as well as to the mayors is anything they need, we will be there, and we will cut through red tape," Obama said. "We are not going to get bogged down with a lot of rules."
Authorities warned that New York could get hit with a surge of seawater that could swamp parts of lower Manhattan, flood subway tunnels and cripple the network of electrical and communications lines that are vital to the nation's financial center.
Major U.S. financial markets, including the New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and CME Group in Chicago, planned a rare shutdown Monday. The NYSE closed on Sept. 27, 1985, for Hurricane Gloria. The United Nations also shut down and canceled all meetings at its New York headquarters.
New York called off school Monday for the city's 1.1 million students and announced it would suspend all train, bus and subway service Sunday night. More than 5 million riders a day depend on the transit system.
"If you don't evacuate, you are not only endangering your life, you are also endangering the lives of the first responders who are going in to rescue you," Mayor Michael Bloomberg warned. "This is a serious and dangerous storm."
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was typically blunt: "Don't be stupid. Get out."
Wary of being seen as putting their political pursuits ahead of public safety, Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney reshuffled campaign plans as the storm approached.
In Virginia, one of the most competitive states, election officials eased absentee voting requirements for those affected by the storm. Early voting was canceled Monday in Maryland and the District of Columbia.
Sandy, a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 85 mph early Monday, was blamed for 65 deaths in the Caribbean before it began traveling northward, parallel to the Eastern Seaboard. As of 8 a.m. Monday, it was centered about 310 miles south-southeast of New York City, moving to the north at 20 mph, with hurricane-force winds extending an unusual 175 miles from its center.
Gale-force winds blew overnight over coastal North Carolina, southeastern Virginia, the Delmarva Peninsula and coastal New Jersey.
Sandy was expected to hook inland Monday, colliding with a wintry storm moving in from the west and cold air streaming down from the Arctic, and then cut across into Pennsylvania and travel up through New York state.
Forecasters said the combination could bring close to a foot of rain in places, a potentially lethal storm surge of 4 to 11 feet across much of the region, and punishing winds that could cause widespread power outages that last for days. The storm could also dump up to 2 feet of snow in Kentucky, North Carolina and West Virginia.
FEMA administrator Craig Fugate said the agency's teams were deployed from North Carolina to Maine and as far inland as West Virginia, bringing generators and basic supplies that will be needed in the storm's aftermath.
"I have not been around long enough to see a hurricane forecast with a snow advisory in it," Fugate told NBC's "Today" show.
Pennsylvania's largest utilities brought in hundreds of line and tree-trimming crews in anticipation of several days of power failures or intentional shutdowns in areas with heavy flooding.
In New Jersey, where utilities were widely criticized last year for slow responses after the remnants of storms Irene and Lee, authorities promised a better performance. Hundreds of homes and businesses were already without electricity early Monday.
About 90 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., 17 people abandoned a replica of the tall ship made famous in the film "Mutiny on the Bounty" after the vessel began taking on water, said Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class David Weydert.
The Coast Guard is trying to determine whether to use cutters or helicopters to rescue the crew, who are in two lifeboats and are wearing survival suits and life jackets, he added.
Airlines canceled nearly 7,500 flights and Amtrak began suspending train service across the Northeast. New York, Philadelphia, Washington and Baltimore moved to shut down their subways, buses and trains. Those cities shut down their schools, as did Boston. Non-essential government offices closed in the nation's capital.
On Sunday evening in Rehoboth, Del., only a few cars rolled along Route 1, an artery that is often bumper-to-bumper in summer.
"We were told to get the heck out. I was going to stay, but it's better to be safe than sorry," said Hugh Phillips, who was one of the first in line when a Red Cross shelter opened Sunday afternoon in neighboring Lewes.
Despite the dire warnings, some refused to budge.
Jonas Clark of Manchester Township, N.J. -- right in Sandy's projected path -- stood outside a convenience store, calmly sipping a coffee and wondering why people were working themselves "into a tizzy."
"I've seen a lot of major storms in my time, and there's nothing you can do but take reasonable precautions and ride out things the best you can," said Clark, 73.
The storm threatened to drench areas still recovering from last year's deluges.
In Pompton Lakes, N.J., where record flooding inundated homes a year ago, some residents were already putting belongings out near the curb in advance of the storm.
"They're figuring, divide and conquer," said resident Kevin Gogots. "They'll take the stuff they want to save and put the rest out. Of course, if the street floods again, we'll just have things floating around."

Social media can help any and everyone generate a lot of success. Using social networking to promote a business can be very rewarding, but it also takes time and efforts. Still, there are basic tips to learn to ensure success.
When marketing, don?t put all your eggs in one basket. Expand your potential readership by using multiple websites. It can also be helpful in other ways if you take advantage of the different tools available.
Put subscription buttons for your RSS feed on all of your profiles at social media websites. This can help you generate more visibility to your other outlets. People who become familiar with you will have an easier time to stick by you wherever you wind up on the Internet.
TIP! Make is simple for your followers to sign up for your email newsletter. Email marketing might seem a little old fashioned.
Include a re-tweet option on every post to your blog. This makes it much easier for other people to share your the content through twitter. Not to even mention that more and more people will see your material as it?s shared across the web.
If you are using social media then you will want to market by inviting all the people you know to those pages. Even if they don?t subscribe or follow your page, they?re at least being made aware of your company?s presence.
You can benefit greatly from your exposure to the inner workings of social media networks. Instead of looking at the members of social communities as just potential money makers, view them as fountains of information and knowledge that can help you increase your business focus and effectiveness. Take the time to learn about their habits, what they like and don?t like, and this will give you a deeper understanding of your customers.
TIP! Give your followers special offers. Entice your customers with something unique, something that they can?t find anywhere else.
Watch your traffic go up and down as you put different plans into motion. Analyze these results as carefully as possible. It is crucial that you do not get discouraged because the day hasn?t been going well. But it is imperative that you can see trends and anticipate your actions based on them.
Plan your high-level social media strategy wisely and carefully. If you spend your time and effort on one social marketing strategy, only to switch to the next latest technique, you will wind up at a dead end every time. Look for a good balance between tried and true methods and the latest trends, then adjust and enact your strategy accordingly.
TIP! Try connecting your LinkedIn and Twitter accounts! This way, you can follow any professional contacts you have on Twitter, while allowing them the opportunity to do it, as well. This gives your tweets a trusted and professional feel, and helps build a larger network of professionals within your industry.
If you join a social media site, tell your existing customers that you have done so. Many social media sites will alert all of the follower?s connections that they have begun following a new company or person. This form of free advertising should not be overlooked. Also, it provides a credible and reliable source, which is better than a simple promotion.
Use LinkedIn?s blog feed application to automatically post your blog updates to your LinkedIn page. Simply put up your article and it will show up as LinkedIn-updated. This is a good way to save time and reach out to more people every time you write a new article: keep in mind that your articles should be adapted for the audience you get on your blog and on LinkedIn.
TIP! Keep in mind the experience of others who have gone before. Use lessons that you learn to help you improve your present social marketing plan and increase your profits.
When dealing with social media marketing, make sure you are remaining active. If you want to be successful, you have to be social! The interactions and regular activity keep your audience interested. Alternatively, social media campaigns consisting of fresh, current content can offer tremendous levels of success.
Tweepi or Twellow are excellent sources for finding the more influential Twitter followers found within your niche. These programs can tell you who is running the lists you have identified. You will then be able to submit a message requesting they add you to their lists.
If you were to hold different contests on your social media sites, you could build up your followers fairly quickly. To do this, you would want to require that a user has to enter their email or like your content, etc, in order to enter into the contest. You?d be surprised how many people do this. Even if it?s a tiny prize, you will boost your followers and many will stay around when the contest ends.
TIP! There are different things you can do to increase the effectiveness of your social media promotion campaign. Try to focus on the most popular social media websites such as Twitter, Google Plus and Facebook.
Yahoo offers an excellent opportunity for promoting your product in their question and answer section. This website gives users the chance to submit questions for other users to answer. Think of different issues and concerns that are relevant to your product offering, then use that information to create relevant questions and answers. You can provide quality answers and become an expert.
Develop a real vision of yourself online, but keep in mind that your goal is to create a profitable company. Don?t publish advice or hints that you are not certain of. Your videos and content should be relevant and not offensive to your readers. At the same time, add your own voice to them. By doing this, you are creating a very profitable SMM profile that will benefit you greatly in the long run.
When you use pictures, make sure you use more than your logo. Why is this an important step for you? Well, most people who get involved with social media want to get involved with real people; the ?social? aspect of it all. So by positioning yourself as a real person instead of just a cold company, you?re coming across as friendly and reliable.
TIP! Keep your subscribers updated on your businesses progress on your social media pages. One example can be to let people know when you?ve reached one of your goals.
You should always think about what kind of content you will be posting on your site. Sometimes your emotions take over and you post something you later regret. If you?re careless, however, and make lots of silly mistakes, people will take your business less seriously and you?ll lose potential customers. Even though you are trying to convey an informal message, maintain professionalism.
This not might be everything you need to know, but it is a good start. These are the early days of social media and things change very rapidly. Learn about every tool you can use that will maximize your approach.

Siblings are bound to each other by blood for life but their relationship may need a lot of nurturing and attention. As a parent, you may be worried about how your kids? relationship with each other may turn out to be when they get older. Put these worries at rest and take the following steps to strengthen the bond between your kids.
You can strengthen the bond between your two kids by spending more time as a family. Kids will learn the importance of being with each other only when they see the family bonding together. Whether it is a one-day picnic, an evening of playing board games or going bowling together, make sure you schedule outings and activities through which your kids get a chance to come closer to each other.
If your kids are really young, it may be the right time to etch the importance of sibling relationship on their impressionable minds. If they sleep in separate rooms, having a mock sleepover for them may be the perfect way to bond. Allow them to pitch a tent in the backyard, play board games all night long or play video games for a while. Recreate the kind of fun that they would have with their friends on a sleepover.
Kids love learning new things and if you are sending them to pick up new skills and hobbies after school, make sure they do it together. Having common interests will help them bond for life and they will never run out of things they can do together. Depending on their interests and aptitude, you can enroll them in classes that are about sports, art, baking or other hobby areas.

As Hurricane Sandy heads toward the East Coast, storm crews are placing hundreds of sensors to predict the toll of flooding in the region.
"The combination of an extremely dangerous storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters," according to a National Hurricane Center advisory.
New York City may see its biggest storm surges in history.
"With the high tide occurring tomorrow night, we are looking at many locations approaching record levels of storm surge," said National Weather Service spokesperson Sean Potter.?
Hurricane Irene, for instance, caused surging tides that reached only 4 feet (1.2 meters). In contrast, Sandy is expected to cause life-threatening flooding in New York Harbor and tides of 6 feet to 11 feet (1.8 to 3.3 meters) in areas of Long Island Sound, according to the National Weather Service.?For instance, the Battery in lower Manhattan is expected to see 11.7-foot storm surges, surpassing the 10-foot surges recorded in 1960 with Hurricane Donna, Potter told LiveScience.?
A full moon Monday may intensify storm surges, as the moon's tug will make high tides along the Eastern Seaboard about 20 percent higher than normal, Joe Rao, a meteorologist for News 12 in Westchester, N.Y., told LiveScience sister site OurAmazingPlanet.
The storm's projected duration may also worsen flooding. "We'll still see tropical storm-force winds occurring for 24-36 hours starting into tomorrow morning going into Tuesday afternoon," Potter told LiveScience. "That's one thing that really sets this storm apart compared to Hurricane Irene."
As of 11 a.m. ET on Sunday, Oct. 28, the center of Hurricane Sandy was located 250 miles (400 kilometers) southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and 575 miles (930 km) south of New York City. The storm is moving toward the northeast near 14 miles per hour (23 kilometers per hour). The current forecast track puts the center of Sandy near the coast Monday night, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The winds will likely be near hurricane force at landfall, according to the National Hurricane Center advisory.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), along with other federal agencies, are latching 150 storm surge sensors to poles on piers from Massachusetts to Chesapeake Bay. The gauges track wind gusts, rainfall and water levels at the coast, and eight of the sensors track the storm-tide in real-time as it reaches land.
The data could help scientists predict the toll of the storm. (Some 10 million people are predicted to be without power from the storm.) Data from past storms have helped researchers predict which areas will be hardest hit this time around. The sensors were first deployed during Hurricane Rita in 2005 and again during Hurricane Irene in 2008.
Tracking the toll of Hurricane Sandy will help predict flooding in future storms, according to the USGS.
"With Sandy wehave the opportunity to test and improve predictive models of coastal zone impact based on what we previously learned," said USGS director Marcia Hutt in a press release.

A satellite image of Sandy is shown at the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012. Early Saturday, the storm was about 335 miles southeast of Charleston, S.C. Tropical storm warnings were issued for parts of Florida's East Coast, along with parts of coastal North and South Carolina and the Bahamas. Tropical storm watches were issued for coastal Georgia and parts of South Carolina, along with parts of Florida and Bermuda. Sandy is projected to hit the Atlantic Coast early Tuesday. WASHINGTON (AP) ? The storm that is threatening 60 million Americans in the eastern third of the nation in just a couple of days with high winds, drenching rains, extreme tides, flooding and probably snow is much more than just an ordinary weather system. It's a freakish and unprecedented monster.
How did it get that way?
Start with Sandy, an ordinary late summer hurricane from the tropics, moving north up the East Coast. Bring in a high pressure ridge of air centered around Greenland that blocks the hurricane's normal out-to-sea path and steers it west toward land.
Add a wintry cold front moving in from the west that helps pull Sandy inland and mix in a blast of Arctic air from the north for one big collision. Add a full moon and its usual effect, driving high tides. Factor in immense waves commonly thrashed up by a huge hurricane plus massive gale-force winds.
Do all that and you get a stitched-together weather monster expected to unleash its power over 800 miles, with predictions in some areas of 12 inches of rain, 2 feet of snow and sustained 40- to 50 mph winds.
"The total is greater than the sum of the individual parts" said Louis Uccellini, the environmental prediction chief of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration meteorologists. "That is exactly what's going on here."
This storm is so dangerous and so unusual because it is coming at the tail end of hurricane season and beginning of winter storm season, "so it's kind of taking something from both ? part hurricane, part nor'easter, all trouble," Jeff Masters, director of the private service Weather Underground, said Saturday.
With Sandy expected to lose tropical characteristics, NOAA is putting up high wind watches and warnings that aren't hurricane or tropical for coastal areas north of North Carolina, causing some television meteorologists to complain that it is all too confusing. Nor is it merely a coastal issue anyway. Craig Fugate of the Federal Emergency Management Agency told reporters Saturday: "This is not a coastal threat alone. This is a very large area. This is going to be well inland."
Uccellini, who estimated that 60 million people will feel the storm's wrath somehow, said: "This storm as it grows and moves back to the coast on Monday and Tuesday, the circulation of this storm will extend all the way from the Midwest, the Ohio Valley, toward the Carolinas up into New England and southern Canada. It's really going to be an expansive storm system."
It's a topsy-turvy storm, too. The far northern areas of the East, around Maine, should get much warmer weather as the storm hits, practically shirt-sleeve weather for early November, Masters and Uccellini said. Around the Mason-Dixon line, look for much cooler temperatures. West Virginia and even as far south as North Carolina could see snow. Lots of it.
It is what NOAA forecaster Jim Cisco meant Thursday when he called it "Frankenstorm" in a forecast, an allusion to Mary Shelley's gothic creature of synthesized elements.
Cisco and others have called this storm unprecedented. Uccellini, who has written histories about winter storms, said the closest analogs are the 1991 Perfect Storm that struck northern New England and a November 1950 storm. But this is likely to be stronger and bigger than the Perfect Storm; it will strike farther south, and affect far more people.
In fact, the location among those with the highest odds for gale-force winds in the country's most populous place: New York City. New York has nearly a 2-in-3 chance of gale force winds by Tuesday afternoon.
One of the major components in the ferocity of the storm is that it is swinging inland ? anywhere from Delaware to New York, but most likely southern New Jersey ? almost a due west turn, which is unusual, Uccellini said. So the worst of the storm surge could be north, not south, of landfall. And that gets right to New York City and its vulnerable subways, which are under increasing risk of flooding, he said.
"There is a potential for a huge mess in New York if this storm surge forecast is right," Masters said.
Add to that the hundreds of miles of waves and the overall intensity of this storm, Uccellini said in an interview, and "we are in the middle of a very serious situation."
Forecasters are far more worried about inland flooding from storm surge than they are about winds.
There are several measures for hurricanes. And one NOAA research tool that measures the intensity of hurricane overall kinetic energy forecasts a 5.2 for Sandy's waves and storm surge damage potential. That's on a scale of 0 to 6, putting it up with historic storms, such as Katrina. It rates a much smaller number for wind.
Because of the mix with the winter storm, the wind won't be as intense as it is near the center of a hurricane. But it will reach for hundreds of miles, spreading the energy further, albeit weaker, meteorologists said.
Uccellini and Masters said they expect the central pressure of the storm to drop to a near record low for the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast for any time of year. That is a big indication of energy and helps power the wind. This puts it on par with the 1938 storm that hit Long Island and New England, killing 800 people, or the equivalent of a category 4 hurricane.

STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania (Reuters) - Pennsylvania State University, which was shaken by a molestation scandal that put former coach Jerry Sandusky in prison and tarnished its famed football program, holds a three-day conference starting this weekend aimed at preventing child abuse.
The conference features child sex abuse survivors Sugar Ray Leonard, a former world boxing champion, and Elizabeth Smart, who was abducted in 2002 and held captive for nine months.
Starting on Sunday, it comes just weeks after Sandusky, a former Penn State assistant football coach, was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison for molesting 10 boys over more than a decade.
An independent commission by former FBI chief Louis Freeh concluded that university officials were alerted to Sandusky's abuse, did nothing to stop it and decided against reporting it to authorities.
In a rebuke to the school's failure to stop Sandusky's abuse, the NCAA, the governing body of U.S. college sports, fined Penn State $60 million and voided 14 seasons of football victories.
Longtime Penn State football coach Joe Paterno was fired during the scandal, on grounds he too failed to stop Sandusky. Paterno died in January of lung cancer.
Dr. Kate Staley, a member of Penn State's Justice Center for Research and lead organizer of the conference, said the event was not meant to be an attempt by the university to restore its name.
"The last thing I would have done is put on a PR stunt," Staley said.
She said the conference was intended to be "substantive and educational and awareness-raising."
Attendees from 27 states include police officers, preschool teachers and child sex abuse experts as well as people who may not deal with the issue on a regular basis.
Staley said the topic made people very uncomfortable and reluctant to talk about it.
"One of the things this conference is trying to do is end that silence," she said.
Another speaker at the event is swimmer Margaret Hoelzer, a two-time Olympian who won two silver medals and a bronze in 2008. She was the victim of abuse by a friend's father when she was 5 years old.
"This is certainly not something that anyone needs to go through alone," Hoelzer said. "Keep talking and keep talking until you find someone that believes you."
She added that victims could become victors, "whether that's as a CEO or an Olympian or in a happy relationship."
"You can be successful. Horrible things happen in life, but you can overcome them and be successful," Hoelzer said.

Concluding a series a series of excerpts by Susan Ireland from this article. As we did in our cover-letter white paper not long ago, Ireland examines some conventional wisdom about cover letters.
Conventional Wisdom: Make your cover letter a sales letter.
Ireland?s response: Yes and no. You resume cover letter is a sales letter in the sense that it pitches you to the recruiter or hiring manager. It should also paint a picture of you at the job interview by showing that you know what the company does, what value you offer, and what you?d like to discuss in person. While saying this, your cover letter should reveal your professional personality so the reader gets a sense of you ? the person he?ll be sitting with in the interview.
But an over-the-top sales letter is not appropriate for most job objectives. It may work very well for sales, marketing, and promotion jobs where a ?salesy? approach is expected and valued. But that same sales-letter approach will likely fall like a rock off a cliff for an IT professional, accountant, school teacher, and frankly most occupations not involved with sales.

When digital photography and the Internet were introduced, it was love at first sight. Digital cameras and smartphones with camera capabilities were snatched off shelves sooner than you could say ?cheese.? Since then, tech and online companies have continued to improve upon this reignited love of imagery developing ways to make it better, faster and more meaningful.
Image-based social sites have grown into a highly competitive niche with several revamping their front-end design based on what?s popular now. This year, Pinterest grew 4377% and Facebook continues to dominate the photo-sharing genre with over 300 million photos uploaded every day.
Technologically, we?re moving toward higher resolution monitors and devices becoming available to the general public. As more consumers adapt to technologies such as retina displays, web design companies will need to revisit the way they create graphics and images. Given the tools for sharing user-generated content, consumers are fast becoming tech-literate. So the sites, applications and graphics web designers build must meet or exceed consumer expectations.
From a substance standpoint, our culture is moving toward a more meaningful experience online. As we continue to build these communities and networks the demand for transparency and substance grows. This shift is so strong it?s even started to change the style and approach of ad campaigns hoping to reach new targets with a ?soft sell? approach. More and more companies are finding out the benefits of personal recommendations and user-generated content.
When it comes to how you represent your business online, all trends point toward authenticity. This means having a genuine representation of your company. We can now wave goodbye to the stock images and say hello to custom photography, social networking and relationship building.
From social sites revamping their infrastructure to be more ?photo-centric? to newer technologies like retina displays, photography is clearly dominating the web-space. We feel it?s so important that we?ve now added custom photography to our arsenal of online services. So when it comes to your online strategy, we can help you provide that meaningful experience to help increase your bottom line.
