Drinking Made Easy ? Too Much, the Magic Bus: GABF Beer Bus Tour

During the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, CO, one of the many things visitors can enjoy is a bus tour to some fabulous metro area breweries. One of those tours organized by Visit Denver was a trip to three of Denver?s newest brewers: Renegade Brewing, Hogshead Brewery and Prost Brewing Company. Here?s the lowdown on these exciting new breweries:

Renegade ? Their motto is ?bring a friend or make a friend.? Renegade Brewing Company is located in the Santa Fe Arts District near downtown Denver. Founded by Brian and Khara O?Connell, Renegade beers are known for their distinctive sharp flavors. Their flagship beer, Ryeteous Rye IPA, is their most popular and loaded with spicy rye. Their other popular beer is the Elevation Triple IPA. At 11.2% ABV and plus 100 IBUs, this beer will tickle your taste buds. I prefer their 5 O?Clock Blonde Ale and their 2 Down Imperial Pilsner. The taproom has plenty of windows, indoor/outdoor seating and is a great place to enjoy a beer on a sunny afternoon. The Ryeteous is available in 16 oz., 4-pack cans to take home or take hiking. Taproom hours are Tuesdays through Thursdays 3 to 10 p.m., Fridays and Saturday from 2 to 10 p.m., Sundays 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Mondays from 3 to 9 p.m. Check their website for food truck offerings. Visit Renegade Brewing after a First Friday art viewing at the Santa Fe Arts District. The next one is November 2.

Hogshead ? This brand new brewery, opened just last month, is the only one in Denver making English-style cask-conditioned ales for the public. Cask ale or cask-conditioned beer is unfiltered and unpasteurized with a secondary fermentation and served from the cask (container) it was made in. It is also served without the use of extraneous carbon dioxide.? British transplant Stephen Kirby began cask-conditioned brewing when he discovered he couldn?t get beers in Denver like he had back home.

?No one was doing that here,? he told us. ?A good beer has presence, body and mouth feel. In Europe, specifically UK, German and Czech, [people] want [to drink] 4 or 5 beers and not get full.?

I enjoyed their Lake Lightening which is a summer ale they brew all year long. The Gilpin Black Gold is brewed with roasted crystal chocolate and brown malt and Fuggles hops. The beer has a touch of coffee, chocolate and roasted nut flavor.? The Hogshead Brewery and taproom are housed in a redesigned 1950s gas station. The building was picked because of its prime location in the Highlands area of Denver. It is also dog friendly with water bowls and outdoor patio. The place also has 16 parking spots, which are hard to find in the Highlands. Find Hogshead Brewery at 4460 West 29th Avenue just north of Sloan?s Lake.

Prost ? This brewery, which opened in the spring, is also brewing something that can?t be found in Denver, traditional German-style bier. The brewery is comprised of equipment originally built by the Ziemann GmbH in 1963 and used by the Bucher Br?u in Grafenau until 1984. From there it went to the Brauerei Hummer in the Bavarian village of Breiteng??bach until the 2011. The equipment then made its way across the Atlantic Ocean to Denver where is it now under the roof of Prost Brewing. That?s a long journey. What makes the equipment special, according to Co-founder and head brewer Bill Eye, is the traditional copper kettle.

?Yeast loves copper,? he said with a grin. Eye, who used to work for Dry Dock Brewing in Aurora, CO, told us that steel kettles seem to get dirtier as brewers use them, however, copper kettles actually get cleaner after brewing.

Prost beers are exactly what you find in southern Germany: ?Marzen, Wei?bier, Pilsners and Dunkels. The taproom features row after row of long picnic tables, both indoors and out and features daily food trucks. You can also enjoy the German-style combos of beer and lemon soda called Radlers, Alsters, and Russ?ns. Prost is located at 2540 19th Street with great views of downtown Denver and a small parking lot of its own. Take the 20th Street Exit off of I-25.

Cheers!
